THE ANCIENT ART OF FALCONRY

Falconry, in short, involves the use of trained birds of prey in sport or for game hunting.

Once the favorite pastime of kings and royals, falconry has been practiced and refined for more than 10,000 years. Practiced by war mongers between military campaigns, it is also paved the way for diplomatic ties between nations. The popularity of falconry, however, waned following the development of modern weapons and hunting tools. The sport has even fell victim to wars, regional conflicts and political unrest within countries.

More recently and on the back of its ancient roots, falconry clubs and organizations around the world have launched a concerted effort to have UNESCO list Falconry as a "World Heritage" and/or an "Intangible Cultural Heritage."

WELCOME TO LANGKAWI (AGAIN)

There is no better venue to showcase Malaysian birds of prey via falconry displays than on Langkawi Island. Not only is Malaysia home to more than 50 different varieties of birds of prey, Langkawi is named after a legendary brown eagle. Visitors arriving on the island by sea will no doubt remember the giant brown eagle–resembling a Brahminy Kite–that greets them on their arrival.

Although practiced for more than 10,000 years in other regions, falconry has not been a part of Malaysia's cultural heritage nor history–not even as a royal pastime. However, come August, introducing falconry on Langkawi will be our next Animal Adventure. This adventure will, no doubt, will be our most challenging one yet.
